This week at DERI

MAARS has been nominated for the 'One to Watch' award by Enterprise Ireland.

"Enterprise Ireland has commissioned a special award called the 'One to Watch' award which will be presented to the researcher deemed to have the most commercial potential, both in their approach to research and in the technologies they have developed."

Dr. Laurentiu Vasiliu, DERI at NUI Galway, for the project MAARS has been nominated for the 'One to Watch' Award 2009 " for developing software that helps financial experts to make complex calculations instantly. An example of how it could be used would be to allow an investment executive to analyse and compare the performance of hundreds, even thousands of mutual funds at one time."

Visit the webpage to have a look on the nominees.

Linked Data Research Centre (LiDRC) : a DERI's research centre

The goal of the centres is to bundle know-how, skills and technologies available in DERI in emerging and promising fields. The centres combine the expertise of different core research and application groups to enable new developments and critical mass in areas requiring a diverse set of skills and provide a points of contacts for research partnerships.

Consequently, the Linked Data Research Centre (LiDRC) is "a cross-unit operating effort to bundle activities around linked data, appointed to drive and lead the linked data research and development. "

2009 Semantic Technology Conference is over

As announced in the previous post, various talks were given by DERI. The slides of the two tutorials are available online :

Hello Open World - The Web of Data for the Pragmatic Developer
Alexandre Passant and Giovanni Tummarello

Semantic Enterprise 2.0 - Enabling Semantic Web technologies in Enterprise 2.0 environment

VoCamp Sunnyvalle 2009

A Vocamp organized with the help of Yahoo followed the conference where few DERI members attended.

A vocamp is a two days informal meetings with hands-on work in small group and practical outputs. The aim is to create new vocabularies/ontologies for the Semantic Web/Web of Data.

The first VoCamp event took place in Oxford UK in September 2008 (VoCampOxford2008). DERI organised the second Vocamp in Galway, Ireland in November 2008 (VoCampGalway2008). The VoCamp Sunnyvale is the seven one.

2009 Semantic Technology Conference

The annual SemTech conference is starting. In the post titled "2009 Semantic Technology Conference " find information about the strong presence of DERI at the conference.

Common Tag : a new vocabulary for Semantic Tagging

A group of Web and Semantic Web companies, including DERI, announced a few days ago the development of a new tagging format for Web pages called Common Tag. As said on the Press Release, "The companies--AdaptiveBlue, DERI (NUI Galway), Faviki, Freebase, Yahoo!, Zemanta, and Zigtag - offer services that help publishers use semantic tagging to make their content more discoverable, connected, and engaging. ".You can find below the initial ecosystem that will allow to publish, find and re-use tagged data, and that interacts strongly with past efforts in DERI such as SIOC and Sindice.

IAOA - International Association for Ontology and its Applications

DERI is involved in the newly established International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA)

The idea of IAOA is to establish a professional association for ontology researchers across disciplines, based e.g. on the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL: http://www.aclweb.org).

IAOA will be in charge of organizing the future FOIS conferences (Formal Ontology in Information Systems), see e.g.
http://fois08.dfki.de/
http://fois2010.mie.utoronto.ca/

The journal "Applied Ontology" published by IOS press will also be closely associated with IAOA.

DERI Tutorial

As usual, slides of the last tutorial " Introduction to SOA" by  Sami Bhiri are available on the archive webpage.

The next tutorial will be given by Siegfried Handschuh "Annotation for the Semantic Web" - Visit our tutorial webpage to get details.
