This week at DERI
MAARS has been nominated for the 'One to Watch' award by Enterprise Ireland.
"Enterprise Ireland has commissioned a special award called the 'One to Watch' award which will be presented to the researcher deemed to have the most commercial potential, both in their approach to research and in the technologies they have developed."
Dr. Laurentiu Vasiliu, DERI at NUI Galway, for the project MAARS has been nominated for the 'One to Watch' Award 2009 " for developing software that helps financial experts to make complex calculations instantly. An example of how it could be used would be to allow an investment executive to analyse and compare the performance of hundreds, even thousands of mutual funds at one time."

Linked Data Research Centre (LiDRC) : a DERI's research centre
The goal of the centres is to bundle know-how, skills and technologies available in DERI in emerging and promising fields. The centres combine the expertise of different core research and application groups to enable new developments and critical mass in areas requiring a diverse set of skills and provide a points of contacts for research partnerships.
Consequently, the Linked Data Research Centre (LiDRC) is "a cross-unit operating effort to bundle activities around linked data, appointed to drive and lead the linked data research and development. "

VoCamp Sunnyvalle 2009
A Vocamp organized with the help of Yahoo followed the conference where few DERI members attended.
A vocamp is a two days informal meetings with hands-on work in small group and practical outputs. The aim is to create new vocabularies/ontologies for the Semantic Web/Web of Data.
The first VoCamp event took place in Oxford UK in September 2008 (VoCampOxford2008). DERI organised the second Vocamp in Galway, Ireland in November 2008 (VoCampGalway2008). The VoCamp Sunnyvale is the seven one.
The upcoming vocamps are :

- and in fall 09 in Nice, France
